Yoga and the Menopause PDF Print E-mail

Yoga is of tremendous benefit whatever your age but it can be particularly beneficial during the menopause. Not only does it help to improve flexibility, it helps to build strength and stamina at a time when the changes in our bodies lead to lower energy and muscle loss. Practising yoga gently exercises the whole body. As well as improve the fitness and physical appearance of the external body, the regular practice of asanas (yoga positions) massages the internal organs enabling them to function more efficiently. Attending a class is a good idea, especially if you are a beginner, because the yoga teacher can help you to maximise the benefits by ensuring your alignment is correct. They can also advise you on any injuries you may have and help you to adapt the asanas to protect your body.

Cath Brzeski, an excellent and knowledgeable yoga teacher who runs classes in Crieff and Comrie, has provided the following paraphrased and quoted from Geeta Iyengar’s book  “ A Gem for Women”

The stopping of the menstrual cycle, usually occurs between 45-55 years. Just as at the beginning of menstruation when physical and psychological disturbances occur, women again have to face disturbances at the stage of menopause. As the ovaries cease to function, other glands such as the thyroid and adrenals become hyperactive and there is an imbalance of hormones causing hot flushes, high blood pressure, heaviness in the breasts, headaches, insomnia, obesity, etc. Due to these changes in metabolism, women have to learn to face these problems by improving their physical and mental stability.

“Arising out of a feeling that one has lost one’s womanhood there can be emotional disturbance, loss of balance and poise resulting in short temper, jealousy, depression, fear and anxiety. This is a critical period of adjustment and at this juncture, practice of Yoga asanas is extremely beneficial as it calms the nervous system and brings equipoise. Yoga is a gift at this stage of life. It not only brings health and happiness but also freshness of mind and a bright outlook on life. It is never too late to take up Yoga and how useful Yoga is can only be understood by practising it.”
